Understanding Poetry

Look up your eyes in the dictionary
    & what do you see?
    Writing a poem is
like running with a pack of wolves
    & being accepted
    as one of their own
until you can keep up no longer
    or dancing all night
with a room full of strangers
in some wild celebration
& waking up the next morning
    alone in a vacant lot

You know how sometimes
    you just can't think
of the word for something?
Well I'd like to become
    that word for you
but language keeps wandering away
    from what it's supposed
    to be talking about
Writing poetry is its own reward
    Nothing we utter
    is the truth for long

No matter how much you read
    you'll never find
    your place in a book
Language is like a children's game gone mad
    We started speaking
by making sounds instead of words
When we got what we wanted
    we used those sounds again
The true content of poetry
isn't in the meaning of the words
but in the energy that is it's source

Understanding poetry is like going
    to visit a new friend
who doesn't live anywhere
No use knocking
    Nobody's home
    & the door's wide open
